Gen AI | UX Research

The caption generator was a feature that had been designed a year prior for JABA's AI app, but it was never moved into development. Clear problems were pointed out by team members, who called for a redesign.

Leading this redesign, I had clear goals. I wanted the feature to be informed through research, and I also aimed to create something that is not just another wave in the AI surge, but that is an effective tool to our users. I’m thankful for the trust that my superiors had in my vision, and the opportunity that this project gave me to explore UX research in a startup environment.

My Process

Review

Speak with team members and review the existing materials for the current design.

Research

Conduct user research on the current model to understand the pain points.

Analysis

Analyze the data found, and compare/contrast with our competitors.

Present

Present findings to the team and propose a new path ahead based on the data.

Design

Design a refined experience, complete with user flow and UI mockups.

Refine

Continue to test and refine the design before final UI and development.

My Work

Journey Maps

In order to further understand the existing design, we decided to do journey mapping. This let us see what a potential user's experience with the feature may be like.

We created 4 journey maps in total, and looked for the commonalities. These maps showcased the pain points of the current user flow, which would need our attention.

Competitor Analysis

The competitor analysis I conducted showed me that 2/3 of our competitors follow the same structure of 1 optional field, 3 required fields, and 2 of those required being auto-filled to start.

This was important information to go off of as we strike the balance of gathering enough information, but also keeping the process timely and automated.

Wireframes

Informed by our resarch, we moved on to wireframing. This gave up the opportunity to get our thoughts on paper, and to start brainstorming UI for our proposed user flow.

Final Design

This project was an opportunity for me to experiment with different user experience strategies that I had previously only studied. Though I no longer intern at the company, we had planned to go on to conduct A/B testing with the mockups, and let that user feedback inform the next round of design.

I also learned a great deal about designing for Generative AI from working on this feature, and for the JABA AI product in general. It was vital that I know how our technology works and what my limitations as a designer are. It's really exciting having this experience in my back pocket, given the speed at which AI is becoming prevalent in product design.
